Newspapers Are (Finally) Loving Social Media
Maybe it is because they learned their lesson when they originally blew off blogs, but newspapers are embracing social media in a big way. Recently, the New York Times went so far as to hire a “Social Media Editor” who’s only job is to expand the use of social media by the New York Times. The results of this hiring remain to be seen, but the hiring has so far had mixed reviews from bloggers.
A quick look at my local paper, the Orange County Register, revealed they have at least 10 different Twitter accounts associated with the paper:
I stopped looking after finding 20 Twitter accounts associated with The Los Angeles Times, here is a sampling:
- LATimes
- LATimesgreen
- LATshowtracker
- LATimeshome
- LATimesmost
- LATimestweets
- LATHotProperty
- LATimesiphone
- LATreadersrep
- latimesblogs
So while the future of newspapers in the social media age remains uncertain, it certainly does appear that many are adopting the “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” philosophy. The question is though—is it too late?
